Okay so you understand that list building can be the life blood of every business be it an online business or an offline business. It really does not matter what business you are in. If you run a "Physical" business such as shop or restaurant, a garage, a real estate agent, whatever as long as it is an Offline (you may have an online business as well) business then you really must capture as many potential customers emails as possible - In fact the more potential customers you capture the better.

2.) Do this by offering a free catalogue, a prize draw for a dinner for two per month, or a bottle of Champagne once per quarter - ideally make it something that is cheap to you but of value to the customer. e.g. the free Champagne is free provided you buy two main meals. This of particularly good for restaurants where the busier you appear the more people will come in!

3.) If you run an online business or an offline business with an online side to it as well then please make sure you have an email capture box on every page (The top right is the best place).

4.) If you run an online business join a forum relevant to your business and make regular and relevant posts, just making sure that you have a link to your email sign up page (often known as a squeeze page) in your forums signature. This is one of the best free ways of gaining email subscribers, but you need something such as free report to give away in order to get people to sign up.

5.) For an offline business if people are in a hurry they may not want to fill out their details due to time pressures, so have a bowl that they can put their business cards in. Also if you run a cafe/bar/restaurant and give people a card to fill in with their details make sure you give them a pen/pencil to do so. I think 90% of the places I see people handing out customer cards to fill in do not give them a pen! Hence an email capture is lost.

There are two ways to build your list regardless of your market niche, the first is to use pay per click advertising and spend a fortune building a list. The second way is to build your list for free.

I would advise against build a list with pay per click advertising such as Google AdWords. I have tried it before and the result was painfully expensive for very little return. I would only advise going down this route if you are a large company with a large marketing budget and need to build a list fast.

So I guess that you ideally want to build your list for free? Well it does take time and effort but I have found it to actually give better results in terms of people signing up to your email list, as with the free methods I will show you below you are focussing on getting targeted traffic. This will result in a lot more people signing up.

Here are my free tips: -

1.) Make sure you have the ability to capture peoples email details on every page. Pop ups that slide in from the side like those provided by AWeber.com that are fully customisable have been found to be the most effective way of getting people to sign up.

2.) Give people a good or ideally an outstanding reason to sign up. If your website just says "Please join our newsletter" and gives them no reason to then you will get very little if any people signing up to it at all. One of the best ways to get people to sign up is to offer a free report that is relevant to both them and you. This way when they do sign up you know you have a target focused subscriber.

3.) Run a monthly competition with a prize given away at random to your subscribers

4.) Join forums that are relevant to your website content and begin posting meaningful or helpful content. After ten to fifteen posts then add in a link to your newsletter subscription page in your signature. I have found this to be one of the fastest free ways to gain subscribers to my lists, and once again if the forum is relevant to your site then those people that sign up will be targeted traffic / potential customers.

5.) You can write relevant articles and drive targeted traffic to your registration page.

What I would recommend is to have a mix of free information and promotional-based content - In that you can send out 4 emails that contains free information for your subscribers, and 2 emails that contain information where you review a product/service.
